The Dixie Escalante Kite Festival is designed to promote reading as a habit and encourage students to
engage in family-oriented physical activity. Qualifying students earn a high-quality kite for their
reading efforts. Also, contributions are made to the Washington County School Foundation for
distribution to schools most actively involved in the kite festival based on attendance.
Reading Guide:
Read at home based upon the guidelines for your grade level and earn a
free kite. All qualifying
reading is to be done at home.
Monday, January 11, 2010 - Reading charts are distributed at schools and reading program begins.
Saturday, April 17, 2010 - Reading program ends. (The 14-week reading period allows for the required 13
weeks of reading with 1 extra week for makeup because of illness, vacation, etc.)
Reading Time Requirements:
Kindergarten and First Grade - 650 Minutes total (50 minutes per week minimum)
Second and Third Grade - 975 Minutes total (75 minutes per week minimum)
Fourth and Fifth Grade - 1300 Minutes total (100 minutes per week minimum)
Reading should be done any day during the week as long as the per-week reading minimum is achieved.
To Receive Your Free Kite:
Bring the completed three month Home Reading Chart, signed by your parent, to the Kite Festival, Saturday,
April 17, 2010, held at the SunRiver Golf Course. Kite redemption will begin at 10:00 a.m. and
end at 7:00 p.m.
Additional Prizes:
Drawings for Ipods and Laser Mania Family Fun Center passes will be taken from the reading charts that
were dropped off by children that attended the Kite Festival. Winners will be notified within 30 days
following the Kite Festival.
Lost Your Reading Chart?
Don't worry! Your school office has extra copies they can give you. If they run out, ask them to contact
us and we'll send them more. Don't let a lost reading chart stop you from claiming your free kite or
book!
