Rokkaku Rules

The object of the competition is to have control of the Rokkaku kite in the air and be the last kite flying, as well as, be actively involved in eliminating the competitions kites.

1. Teams and school staff members must check in with judges 15 minutes before the competition. Upon checking in, the Rokkaku Kite and line will be signed out to the team captain from the competition judge. Any alterations or adulterations of materials of the Rokkaku Kite or line will call for immediate disqualification.

2. All teams must supply their own gloves for handling kite lines.

3. Student team members and judges are the only people allowed on the flying field after the launch command is given. Each team may consist of a maximum of three students.

4. Teams will launch on a signal given by the Head Judge. Kites that fail to launch within 30 seconds of that signal are disqualified. Once kites have launched, the Head Judge will announce that the contest has begun and kites may engage.

5. All teams must be prepared to be aggressive in their flying and stay within the competition area. Contestants are required to compete. Following one warning, fliers may be disqualified for not engaging in full combat.

6. Kites may be grounded by flying techniques, which include cutting a flying line or bridle, tipping, or blocking their wind. To accomplish this, a team may maneuver their own kite or line to contact an opposing kite, line, or bridle. Contestants who engage in intentional physical contact with other contestants, or with an opponent’s kite, line, or bridle will be immediately disqualified.

7. Kites are eliminated from the round when their line is cut or their kite is grounded for any reason. Touching of the kite or the kite bridle by the contestant flying it will be scored the same as a ground touch.

8. Once grounded, fliers should take all appropriate steps to remove their kite and line from the field and not interrupt the continuing competition.

9. All teams will fly together in two different rounds with ten minutes of rest and repair time between each round. Teams unable to launch at the end of the repair period will not participate in the second round.

10. Scoring Method: Five points will be awarded to a team whenever they cut or down an opposing kite. One point will be awarded to teams for each contact they initiate with an opposing kite or kite line. If both teams are actively involved with initiating the contact, both teams will be awarded one point. The last kite remaining in a round will receive 5 points. The second, third, fourth, and fifth kites will receive 4, 3, 2, and 1 points respectively.

11. At the end of each round, judges will confer to calculate total points. If it is not clear which contestant is responsible for a point, no point will be issued. In situations where multiple kites are involved in grounding a kite, the last kite to make contact receives the points.

12. At the end of the second round, the team with the greatest total points is the winner.

13. The Head Judge has final call on all matters in this competition.

14. First prize will be $850. Second prize will be $600. Third prize will be $300. The prize winnings will be deposited into the school’s Foundation account for the winning club/group.
